Credit Card Forgiveness

by CA Gal
(San Jose, Ca. )

I lost my job last year so my credit card company offered me a settlement. They 'charged off' my account and I sent them a check for a portion of the amount owed. I received a 1099 form from them recently. I read on line that if they 'charged off' my account then I didn't have to pay the taxes on the 1099 because they had already taken the tax credit on the amt. owed. Can you please advise? thank you (please do not list my email address on line for all to see...thank you)

Filter Account

I have a small administrative service business and have a second "filter" checking account set up for clients which is used to make payments for various items on behalf of the client, hence the work filter account.

I'm having trouble finding any helpful reference information about how to manage my bookkeeping for the account in relation to my own books. The account is basically just a service I provide and depending on the service I don't always retain an earning for it.

Could you tell me where I can find more information regarding this matter? I’m afraid to have those deposits and withdrawals in the filter account tied to my own businesses accounting due to tax purposes.

Thanks so much in advance.

Sincerely,

Jessica Reyes

Asset Depreciation Trial Balance

I have an asset worth £100,000,which I am depreciating at 20% over 5 years using the straight line method.

At the end of year one I understand that on the trial balance the figures will be:

asset 100,000 Dr
provision for depreciation 20,000 Cr.

When I start year 2 which is correct on my trial balance?

asset 100,000 Dr
prov for depreciation 40,000 Cr

or

Asset 80,000
Prov for depreciation 20,000 Cr

This is a manual bookkeeping level 2 question as I am currently a student but this particular question does not seem to be covered.

Half Price Gift Certificates

by Rob
(London Ontario)

Hi,
I run a restaurant and recently purchased radio advertising time by issuing half price gift certificates. The radio station sells the certificate for half the face value. I accrue air time from the radio station and I honor the face value of the certificate to the purchaser.
My question is how I account for this transaction on my books? I understand that if I sell a gift certificate for full value it becomes a debit to my gift certificate liability account and a credit to my cash. I am confused by the half price component and how to account for where the funds come from, as this is essentially funded as an advertising expense.
Any assistance you can provide is greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Rob

Journal Entries and Suspense Account

by Darren
(Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK)

I need to make the journal entries to correct these errors:

Trial balance failed to agree and the difference of £680 is recorded in the credit side of a Suspence acc. On investigation the following errors are discovered:

1. A purchase inv for £157 had been postedto J W Day & Sons in error. The goods have be bought from Days Supplies.

2. The Sales Day Book has been overcast by £220.

3. A cheque payment for repairs to the office building of £41 had been entered in the accounts as £14.

4. A payment by cheque of £50 to A Biggs has been debited in the cash book and credited to A Biggs Acc.

5. The purchase of a motor vehicle costing £5600 has been entered correctly into the bank account but debited to the motor vehicles account as £6500.

6. A credit sale of £180 had not been entered into the accounts.

I need details of a suspense acc showing the original opening balance and the entries that must be made to clear the account.

Many thanks.

Journal Entry - Possibly

I used my current account to pay an invoice off my credit card but as the invoice was a supplier and i had an account for them in my purchase ledger i did the following

CR Current Bank Account
DR Trade Creditor Control Account

I need the payment to show up in my Credit Card Account as a receipt so that the balance matches my statement. (even thought it wont paid from that account)

How do i do this? Would i do the following journal entry?

CR Trade Creditors Control Account
DR Credit Card Account

If the above is right then i need to do something else (as my trade creditors account wont balance) - yes? no? -

Thanks ever so much

Moving Liability Balance Between Funds in Church Accounting

by Carol
(California)

The software program I am using provides multiple fund accounting. Our church has just finished our capital campaign and during that time the monies received/disbursed were in their own separate fund. We are now moving the remaining cash balance as well as the mortgage principal balance to the general fund (operating budget) In order to move the liability to the general fund, the journal entry would be a debit to the Liability account (mortgage principal) but what would be the credit side? Would a credit to the equity account be acceptable?

Old PR Liability Checks

by Elaine
(Sparks, NV)

During the 4th qtr '09, I wrote payroll liability checks after each payroll. I found out my boss never took them to the bank. I need to void these checks. They will not be replaced just yet. What date do I use to as the void date: the orig date of the checks (in 2009) or my most recent unreconciled bank statement (3/31/10)? All 2009 federal 941 reports have been filed with balances due that we will pay later. These liabilites have to go back into the general ledger so they'll be there when we finally pay the taxes. I have not closed the year 2009. All bank recs have been done.

QuickBooks Simple Start Credit Card Registry

by Deanna
(NY)

I have balanced my "Bank credit card (BCC)" register in the QB program. All charges and payments are posted with the balance exactly as my ending statement as of August 2010 with payments going to my expense account titled "Payment to CC liability". When I enter a payment in the BCC registry it does not automatically post to my checking registry. If I then put the payment in my checking registry it will show one entry as a (+) payment and one right under it as a (-) canceling each other out on the Payment to CC Liability balance sheet. Is that how it's supposed to react? When I then go to my profit and loss, my "Payment to CC liability" show 0.00. Is that right?

Where does the "Payment to CC liability" payments go in relation to my Profit and Loss if it is showing 0.00?

I have made sure I've stayed on "cash" as I do this and not "accrual".

I am entering my charges under the appropriate expense name, ie Supplies, Fees, Interest, Insurance etc.

What am I not understanding? Can you put it in more simple terms than QB Simple Start?

Thanks for any help.

Bookkeeping

by WORRIED
(USA)

Hi,

My sister doesn't keep records of her business, she just goes by what she buys and has a good idea how much that is, and sells to ladies anywhere and everywhere and knows she is always making a nice profit. She pays her bills without problems. She never charges for sells tax because she sells "wholesale and travels often out of state." She doesn't keep records of milage, hotel bills, etc. I know nothing about this type of business, but she has done this for many years. Even if I could convince her about how important bookeeping is, where would she start. For her to keep record of every sale would be 20 or 5o sells a day at least. When she does her taxes, she knows how much she pays out by the companies records that she purchases from, and the percentage of her mark-up.
Please advise - she'll listen if I have the info., but I have never owned a business, so I don't know myself.
THANKS,
WORRIED

Start Bookkeeping For a New Business

by Sithembiso
(Mtubatuba RSA)

My business started in April 2010, It's government nutrition scheme for the poor, so I'm the supplier. I have currently spent R 10000 for April and may waiting for the payment from the government of R 22000.

Now my question is how do I start the bookkeeping?

I don't owe anybody anything, except for the petrol card I've just received from the bank and have not even used, it has a balance of R1000.

What titles or columns must I add on my bookkeeping to ensure that everything is transparent and that I will probably save money. I don't have any employees, my job is to supply and wait for the payment then supply the following month and wait again.

Please help. I hope I'm making sense!

Thank you

Vendor Refund From Previous Year's Billing

by PDevline
(Tahoe City, CA)

In late Nov 2009 we switched cable TV companies, our last billing from the original company was for the month of November and paid in advanced. In January 2010, we received a refund for the partial month.

I need to know how to post this against an account that is no long active and also for a bill that was from the previous FY.

Our FY is by calendar year, so showing the refund in 2010 against a bill in 2009 is not possible nor is showing the refund in 2009 to be deposited in 2010.

Any help is much appreciated.

Voiding Uncashed Payroll Checks From Previous Years.

An officer of a corporation has numerous payroll checks from previous years that he has not cashed due to cash flow issues. He now just wants to void those checks. Since these are old payroll checks occurring in previous years, how is this recorded and what effect does it have on his personal taxes since he did not receive this money?

Capturing Invoices

I am putting together an income statement every month. Do I capture the invoices in the month of the invoice date or the month they are paid?

Many thanks
