State Income Tax Question

State Income Tax Question

I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada. I am originally from England. I have been making contributions to the British state pension plan.

I will have to declare this pension as income when it starts at the age of 65. Can I claim these contributions on my personal income tax, if so on what line?

British State Pension in Canada
by: BB

As a Canadian resident, you generally cannot claim contributions to a foreign state pension plan on your personal income tax return. However, you may be eligible for certain foreign tax credits or deductions. Consult with a tax professional to ensure you comply with Canadian tax laws and explore any available benefits.

Live & Work in South Dakota, but have a Minnesota Residence.

by Calvin G.
(Brookings, SD)

I'm helping a friend do her taxes. She has had a residence in the State of South Dakota since the end of January 2010. She works in South Dakota as well.

Problem is she still has her drivers license for Minnesota and is paying Minnesota State income tax through her employer.

Since her residence and work is here (South Dakota), what do we need to do to file to get a MN State income tax returned?

When filing your tax return on line with Turbo Tax, H&R block etc, will they let you file on line if you take a medical deduction for your live-in girl friend if it qualifies in all ways but you are violating the states old cohabitation law?

Mistaken State Residency

by L. Massey
(Louisiana)

I receive a pension from the Federal Government. I used to live in California. We moved in 2009 to Louisiana.
By mistake, our state of residency was NOT updated and therefore California taxes were taken out of the 1099R.
We paid Louisiana state taxes on this income.
Do we have to file California tax forms on the 1099R income, or on the entire W2 income? All W2 income was in Louisiana, not California.
If we can file with California to get this tax amount refunded, must we use the ENTIRE income amount stated on our federal form, or just the income taxed by California?
We have already filed and received a refund from federal, and filed and paid with Louisiana.

To sum up: My state of residency was mistakenly assigned to California, NOT the proper state of Louisiana, for the tax year 2010. California took taxes from my federal retirement income stated on the 1099R.
IF I file taxes with Cal. to hopefully get a refund on those mistakenly taken taxes, do I use my entire reported federal income or just the 1099R amount?

I hope someone has an answer, it's driving me nuts.

State Mandated Pension Contributions

by Kim
(Michigan)

As a teacher in Michigan, I have state mandated pension contributions withheld from my checks. They come out prior to taxes and are reported in box 14 of my W-2. Where in my tax return should this be reported, if at all?
