Who gets the short end ... the child!
by: Anonymous

No just like the other person can't take off the expenses to raise the child. Clothes, food, toys, misc fees for athletics, etc. WOW! Short end of the stick for supporting YOUR child...

Child Support Not Deductible
by: Steph

Hello,

Sorry, child support is not deductible. Only payments classifed as alimony are an income tax deduction.

Take care!

Child Under 18 Filing

by Michele
(Macomb, MI)

I have a working child under 18. She has an earned income of under $1100 for 2010.

Does she have to file a tax return?

Can I still claim her on my tax return?

Can she file exempt so they dont take out SS tax and Medicare tax from her pay?

thanks, Michele

Childs Father Gives Me Money

(Milwaukee, WI)

My childs father has been giving me $150 a month since April 2011. Im currently on the States insurance and they needed "proof" that i was receiving money from him. (a letter with the amount he gives me, date and signature) do I have to put that down while doing my taxes even though its not considered as "child support"?

Child's Student Loan

I helped pay down some of me child's Sallie Mae Student Loans this year. The loans are in his name only, I am not a cosignor. Will I be able to get the tax write off for that amount or not because it is not my loan ?

Be Careful With Child's Student Loan
by: Anonymous

Student loans are to be used for instructional expenses, therefore if you decide to 'accept' associate unsubsidized loan, and they do not send it to your faculty, or they send you associate 'overage' check - - do not let anyone pick up on your comment here to get your own place.

And if you must get 'busted' - loans used for anything apart from specific faculty connected expenses - can get you barred from the loan program, and you may jeopardize your children's borrowing future for varsity

Student Loan Interest Deduction
by: Stephanie

Hello,

Thank you for your question.

Student Loan Interest can only be deducted for you, your spouce or your child if claimed as a dependent. So, you can claim the amounts you paid for your childs student loan interest only if they are claimed as your dependent on your tax return. Otherwise, they can claim it as a deduction on their own tax return.

Forgot Childcare

I had my taxes done and totally forgot that my kids had been in childcare for a few months at the begining of the year. Will I get in trouble for this?

Thank you for your childcare question.

If you forgot to put on your taxes that you paid for your children to be in childcare, you will NOT get in trouble for this as it is not a requirement to report.

However, it may benefit you to amend your tax return to report the amount of childcare you paid as it may reduce the amount of your tax liability giving you a refund.

Regards!

Grand Kids

by Tracie Hardy
(Texas)

My daughter and 3 children lived full time with us last year. The oldest is handicapped and receives ssi. She has primary custody of the other two. She cannot file an income tax because she did not work outside of the home last year. She is a full time student though. Can we file our taxes with 2 of the children and as head of household. I understand we cannot claim her and our handicapped grandson because of his ssi. She only receives his ssi and a small amount of child support.

Paying My Children To Work In My Cleaning Business

by Bud
(Minnesota)

I have a small commercial cleaning business; sole proprietor; I have 4 daughters, ages from 9 to 17; They all help us at our various cleaning accounts, and we pay them as we would any others that clean for us.

How do I claim this as a business expense, and is there an exemption amount for them, before they would have to claim the $$, and file a personal return? We do not pay them as W2 employees, but my understanding is that we can still claim the $$ paid to them as an expense on our schedule C.

I want to make sure that I am not violating any tax or employment laws, with regard to the children getting paid to work for us.

Rent to Own House Bought For Daughter

Some time ago I purchased a house for which my (divorced) daughter w/5 children was going to pay rent. The object was that eventually the house would be hers.

She has not been able to make any payments and now her children are grown. But she still does not make enough
to pay the monthly $770.00 mortgage which I have continued to pay.

Is any of this, either principal or interest, deductible on my tax return?

Thank you for your time. However, if there is a charge, please do not answer as I am unable to pay anything.

Qualifying Child

by Steve
(Rochester, NY)

I have a situation where the following is true:

1) Single parent has 6 children living at home.

2) One of older children does not meet the qualifying child rule, as he provides over half of his support.

3) Parent desires to claim only 3 of the remaining 5 children.

4) Son would like to claim the other 2 siblings on his tax form.

5) Parent's adjusted gross income is greater than son's adjusted gross income.

Question: Can son correctly claim the 2 dependents?

Dilemma: It seems to me that all the main requirements are met, except I'm not sure about the AGI rule. I understand the situation when 2 people are making claims for the same child. But what if they are NOT making claims for the same child? Does the AGI rule still then apply?

Thanks.
