Can i claim my 28 year old son he lives with me unemployed i give 100% support for all his needs?
Hello Keith,
Thank you for your question.
Yes, you should be able to claim your son as a qualifying relative on your tax return.

My daughter is 24 and a full time college student in the Masters Program at Sac State. She will be a full time student for about 3 more years. My question...can she still be claimed on taxes for either my ex-husband or myself if she is a full time student? Or because she is 24...she will have to be on her own?
Thank you very much!
In order to claim a dependency exemption for your daughter she would need to meet all of the qualifications. Unfortunately, she would not meet the age test which states that she must be a full-time student under the age 24 at the end of the year.
You can, however, claim a qualifying relative expemption for her if she made under $3,400 in gross income and you can prove that you paid more than half of her total support for the year.
Thank you for your question. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

If My Child is 16 yrs old In High School/College still living at home and has a job. Can i still clam him on my return if he decides to file his own taxes?
Hello Jeff,
Thank you for your question.
Yes, if your child is 16 in school living at home and you provide over half the cost of his living you can still claim him on your tax return if he decides to file his own taxes. He will need to know this, as he will not be able to claim the exemption for himself. He will have to check the box that says he was claimed by someone else.

Will i be able to claim my daughter for my 2010 taxes, i only worked for about a month in 2010, she lives with me full time at my parents house, her father does not pay child support
I live in Florida, and I have two children whom we have joint custody... however, they live with the other parent. I have them the entire Summer and 3-4 days a week, not all overnights though. My question is, if I go through and count the days they have stayed overnight with me to see if I have had them half the year... is it only overnights that count or is it also the days I picked them up from school and had them until 8 at night? I do not pay child support, but I provide quite a bit for my children both for my home and the other parent. I feel that it would be fair to be able to claim at lease one of my children... but the other parent is really un-cooperative and well, just selfish. They have claimed both children for the past four years. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hi,
Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.
Here's the situation. I was on the board of directors of a small company and was given stock as payment for my work on the board. I reported the value of that stock (between $0.15 and $0.25 per share) as business income and paid regular income taxes on it.
Two years ago, I left the Board and was given warrants (options) as compensation. The expiration date of the warrants is fast approaching and I have to decide whether to exercise the warrants or not. The warrants are cashless exercise, so I won't have to outlay any money, but I've been told I'll have to report the value of the warrants as income in the year they are exercised.
Here's the question. Assuming I exercise the warrants and therefore end up paying taxes on the value of the warrants, if the company were to go bankrupt and the value of the stock goes to zero, is there any way for me to recoup some of the taxes I have paid?
In the case of both the stock I was given and the warrants I will presumably exercise, I have reported a value which if the company goes bankrupt will end up as zero. Can I claim a capital loss and use that to offset future income?
The reason I want to know this now is that this obviously changes the risk. If I have to pay taxes with no possibility of ever getting it back if the company flops, then maybe I don't want to exercise the warrants (the company is still a high risk deal). On the other hand, if I can get at least some of the taxes back eventually, that lowers the risk.
Thanks in advance.

My wife was taken on a scam involving her grandson, he was suposidly caught in Canada with two other young men with some form of dope and regiured a attorney to represent him.
The money wwould be returned as soon as his inocence was confirmed. The money was to be sent by Western Union. The request was supposidly being made by a kindly police officer.
After sending the money he called back and said they were returning the money because the charges were being changed, but they would require bail money to release him for trial.
She then sent more money via Western Union. I told her it was a scam and called the police but it was too late, the money had been picked up. I have the police report and Western Union paperwork. Is their anyway I can claim this?

I have a question about the interest on credit cards. Can you claim the interest on your credit cards as a tax deduction? What if it is a personal credit card?
Thank you for your question about if you can claim interest on your credit cards. If the credit card is used for personal use, then you typically cannot deduct the interest from the credit card.
However; If the credit card is used exclusively for business use, then you can deduct the interest on your credit cards on your income tax return.

Thank you for your taxes question regarding whether you can claim your baby. If you child was born anytime after January 1, 2012 you would only be able to claim the child in the year 2012. So unfortunately, you will not be able to claim your baby for your 2011 taxes if the baby was born in March of 2012.

HIM AND TAKE A LIFE TIME LEARNING CREDIT. HIS INCOME IS
500.00 FROM INTEREST AND DIVIDENDS.
I have a 19 year old son who works part time and attended college full time. Who would benefit more with claiming that child. Would it be me for paying part of his tuition or does he benefit himself by if no one claims him. I had claimed him last year and he was asked the question if any one is claiming him he said yes.
So again, who would benefit more, myself or my son.

I just filed my taxes and forgot to report the money I made from jury duty. I was on grand jury and probably received appx. $700.
I had to turn all of the money over to my employer so it wasn't really money in my pocket. Since the taxes are already submitted, do I really have to do anything to fix them?

I wan't to claim my kids this year. How long do I have to work, how many pay check's do I need. What is required to claim my children as dependents?
It has been a rough year for my boyfriend and I. He collected unemployment for the first half of the year but it wasn't very much. He did put in applications every week so I did odd jobs off Craigslist and such cleaning houses etc. etc.
I was paid in cash and not thinking of tax time I didn't keep records. I do know how much I made. How do I claim that on my taxes? I made about 3600 over a 5 month period and worked at Walmart for a month as Temp holiday. My boyfriend got a job it lasted 2 months lost it got a Temp job for 2 weeks so he did the same thing but since he can do construction he made quite a bit more about 6700 and kept receipts for tools how do we claim this income without getting ourselves or anyone else in trouble?
Hello,
Thank you for your question.
Typically, money earned from odd jobs would be reported as self employment income on schedule C. The great thing about being self employed is that you do legitimately get to deduct any expenses incurred in doing business such as tools, supplies, etc.. The not so great thing about being self employed is that you have to pay for your own social security and medicare tax. However, the amount owed would be entirely dependent upon what your net income is after expenses. It sounds like you wouldn't have much of a liability if any. If you do end up owing, you can always file an installment agreement request form and make monthly payments as necessary.

Can I claim the money I spent to help my brother without affecting his disabilty check?
My question is this. My wife and I paid tuition for my 21 year old daughter spring semester 2009 while she lived at home. She already filed, and I want to use the tuition cost on my tax return and not claim her as a dependent. Is this legal and possible?
Hello,
Thank you for your question.
I'm sorry, but you can only deduct eduction expenses if you are claiming your daughter as a dependent.
I would like to know whether I am required to claim my 24 year old daughter on my federal income tax return in order for her to stay on my healthcare coverage.
If I file claiming her as a dependent, I will get $500 benefit and she has to pay $700. If I don't claim her, she gets $500 refund, and I will have to pay $500 more in taxes.
My husband's employer requires us to complete a questionnaire every year which stipulates that in order for our children under age 26 to get medical coverage they need to be claimed as dependents on our taxes and need to reside at our address, and we have to responsible for at least one half of their support.
This seems inconsistent with what we've researched and we need your clarification.
Thank you.

Thank you for your claim spouse exemption for 2011 question. I am sorry for your loss!
If your wife passed away in November of 2011, you absolutely can still claim her exemption on your 2011 tax return. In addition, if you have children, you will be able to file as Widowed for the two years following.
Take care!

I was self employed this year and only made 2600.00, my son is 12, and is on ssi. Last year I received a 3989.00 refund because I worked, but this year because I didn't work my estimate refund for 2010 dropped to only 800.00 for a total refund. Can my roommate claim us on his taxes to receive the full refund. I really need that money to pay for things for my child. Thank you
Is there a way that I can find out who claimed me on their income tax return?
Thank you for your question about how to find out who has claimed you on their income tax return. I believe the only way you would be able to find out this information would be to contact the IRS directly at their telephone number for individuals which is 800-849-1040

I am entered into a surrogate pregnancy in the state of Minnesota, I'm wondering if I need to claim my "earnings" on my taxes.

Aug 2009 our daughter and two grandkids (9 &13) moved in with us after a divorce. Our daughter works full time making around #32,000 yr plus receives $6000 in child support. In the divorce, she claims one and her ex claims one of the children. With her debts (mortgage and 2nd mortgage plus one credit card from the marrigae) she has to help pay, she can not afford to live independent with the two kids.
We provide 95% of food, shelter, utilities etc for them and we are both on SS and pension income. Since our daughter leaves for work at 5:30am we have complete responsibility for the kids during the daytime, with school, appointments etc. Needless to say, this has placed a burden on us but we do what we have too.
Last year our daughter claimed both kids and head of household which was best for her and ex with taxes.
Question is: Can we claim anything for our taxes this year to help us out? We don't want to mess her up on her taxes but would help us if we could claim them as dependents.

I earned extra money doing side jobs like mowing grass cleaning yards driveways ect. Where do I claim that on tax forms 1040? I'm trying to file online and can't find where I report monies earned.
Hello,
Thanks for the question.
In most cases you can claim amounts earned from sidejobs totalling under 600.00 on line 21, Other Income.
Otherwise, you would report this as self-employed income on schedule C-EZ and may have to pay your own social security and medicare tax on it.

I lived in my home for 5 years, then got married and we bought another home. We are planning on selling both homes 2 years after the move. At that time, I will meet the capital gains exclusion requirements for the first house, and we will both meet the requirements for the second house (Requiremnet: House must have been primary residence for 2 out of the last five years.) It aslo says that if we file jointly, we can only claim one exclusion every 2 years. So this means that if we file separately, we can each claim an exclusion that year?

Hello, My boyfriend is claiming head of household and myself and our daughter as dependants. He has provided all of our costs in 2011. We have lived with him all 12 months of the last year and I have not worked due to illness. Our daughter is 14 and qualifies as a dependant.
My question is, that I am in default on Government school loans and when I have worked, the IRS obviously keeps my refund. Will this affect my boyfriends tax return because I am in debt?
We were married at one time, but divorced in 2005 and rekindled our relationship in the last year, but we are not married. I am assuming that it is only if we were married that the IRS could keep his refund, but if for any reason my defaulted loans place my boyfriends refund in jeopardy, then I will have him not claim me.
Thank you SO much for providing a place to ask questions and get answers. I have always dome my own taxes, even when I owned my own company, but this is one I really need to be certain of.
Thank you and have a good day.
Sincerely,
Leigh Nassiry
Hi, I'm 20 years old, worked for 3 months(last week of December2010 to March2011), and had $4,700 gross income. After that(June), I start to study outside the country as a full-time student. Can my mom still claim me as her dependent? She provide my expenses in school, food, home.

In 2009, I voluntarily placed my 2 disabled biological children in foster care. The foster family receives income from the county for their care. The children lived with the foster family the entire year. During 2009, I contributed to their support for items such as groceries, clothing, insurance premiums, school lunches, school supplies, etc...Although the foster family contributed 'some', my financial contributions were very likely the majority of their support. (greater than 50%). My financial support for both children totaled approx $10,000 (I have records). I therefore had claimed my 2 children as dependents on my 2009 return. I received a letter from the IRS, stating that another party claimed my children as dependents, and that only 1 party can claim them as dependents. Given my situation, who has the right to claim the children as dependents? Thanks

Also she doesn't work at all but she was getting welfar and now she is getting childsupport by me. Now me on the other hand I've been working for 5 years already and I've been claiming my son since the day he was born.
Even after me and my spouse devorce I was still cliaming him. I make over 30,000 and year and plus I pay child support. We also have joint custody 50/50. Until this day she hasn't had a job but yet she still wants to claim him. Now my question is doesn't she need to bring in some income so she can file taxes and claim him?
