Volunteer Mileage Deduction
by: BB

Yes, you may be able to deduct the mileage for volunteering on your income taxes.

As of 2023, the IRS allows a deduction for mileage driven for charitable purposes, which includes volunteering at theaters and the convention center.

The standard mileage rate for charitable activities was 14 cents per mile in 2021.

To claim the deduction, you need to keep accurate records of your mileage, including the date, purpose, and number of miles driven for each volunteering activity.

Make sure to document the miles driven between your home and the volunteering locations.

Please note that tax laws can change, and it's essential to consult with a tax professional or refer to the IRS guidelines for the most current information on mileage deductions for volunteering activities.

Mileage For Transporting Police Dog

My husband is a police officer and he has a K-9 Police Dog as his partner. He lives at the house with us and we are reimbursed for the care of the dog while at home.

We were wondering if the mileage to and from work would be a work expense for us because we are now responsible for transporting the K9 Police Dog to and from work since he obviously cannot get there on his own (!). Normally officers are given take-home marked police cruisers for this purpose but we do not have one of these. He takes the dog with him in his personal vehicle.
thank you in advance for your help.

Mileage Rate Reimbursement

I use my personal vehicle for work and am reimbursed .37 per mile from my employer.

Can I deduct the difference of the standard federal rate of .50 or .13 per business mile?

Mileage Return?

by Adam
(Boston)

Mileage

Mileage

I'd like to know if the IRS will compensate me for the mileage on my car. I work as a private investigator. I use my personal vehicle for business purposes. It is used both for personal and business reasons, and it is used for business more than 50 percent of the time. I pay for gas using a company gas card. I never personally pay for gas. I pay for insurance and maintenance on the car. (I also possess receipts for every gas transaction). Considering these factors, will I receive any amount per mile for the miles driven for business purposes, say 12,000 miles? Thank you

Mileage Reimbursement
by: Stephanie

You can deduct your unreimbursed business mileage expenses or your actual business vehicle expenses, whichever is greater. You would need to keep a mileage log of how many miles you drive during the year total, along with business vs. personal. You can then determine your business use percentage and multiply your actual expenses against this. This will give you your actual vehicle expense deduction amount. Then you can multiply the amount of business miles by the current year standard mileage rate. If this amount is greater than the actual, you can go ahead and use it instead. But you can only use one or the other. For example:

Let's say you drive a total of 20,000 miles for the year, 12,000 are for business. Your business use percentage is 60% (12,000/20,000). If your total actual expenses for the year including gas, repairs, etc. are 5,000 your actual expense deduction is $3,000 (5,000 X 60%). While your standard mileage deduction for 2010 would be $6,000 (12,000 X .50/mile). Therefore, you would be able to go ahead and take the greater deduction which would be the $6,000 standard mileage deduction.

Perdiem and Mileage

by Kathy
(Bluffton, In US)

My husband is in the plumbers and pipefitters union and usually works out of town. He has a lot of expenses he has to pay out of his own pocket. Nothing is reimbursed. He usually claims perdiem instead of keeping track of all the expenses as it usually is easier and makes more sense. I took our taxes in today to have them done by a tax accountant and she said he could claim perdiem but not mileage too. She said it's either one or the other, not both. My husband has talked to a couple of guys at work who say they can claim both. I need to know how it really is. Can he claim perdiem and mileage both together or only one of them? Thanks a lot. Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Great question.

The rules are that you can claim either actual auto expenses OR mileage, usually whichever is greater. If there are additional out of pocket expenses unrelated to the automobile, he can still claim those as well. He just can't claim a double benefit for auto deductions, it is one or the other.
