Can you deduct health care expenses for an elderly parent (home health care CNA, or Day Care for Adults) if you pay out of pocket?

Income Tax Deduction for Home Health Care
by: Stephanie

Thank you for your question about whether or not you can deduct health care expenses for an elderly parent.

Typically, you are able to deduct the amount of in home medical care expenses you spend for your dependent parent on your tax return as an itemized deduction.

You would only be able to deduct the amount this above the normal 7.5% to 10% of your adjusted gross income.

It also should be considered a medical requirement and the recipient should receive a 1099 from you for the amount paid.
