Unemployment Taxes More Than Withholding

by Hannah
(Texas)

Hi there, I live in Texas and received unemployment in 2010. I had the standard 10% withheld but when entering into my taxes this year, the amount I owe increases several thousand dollars more. Is the 10% not enough to cover that income? Why do I owe so much more on the unemployment income that the 10% withheld? Thank you.

Unemployment

Do I have to pay income tax on unemployment? I worked until Sept. 1,2010 and the rest of the year I drew unemployment. I was thinking that we did not have to pay income tax on unemployment. Evedently I am mistaking reading other questions about unemployment, I see that other people have paid taxes on unemployment.

Unemployment and Severance Pay

I was recently laid off from my job. I am entitled to severance pay for one year. I was told by my former employer to file for unemployment benefits immediately.

My question is am I entitled to collect unemployment while collecting severance pay, or should I wait until the severance pay runs out.
