Getting Paid As a Sole Proprietor

by Val
(California)

How do I record the money I withdrawal from my business for myself? I am a sole proprietor of a small pet store and doing my own bookkeeping. I've always been confused about the correct way to account for paying myself. Thank you!

To record the money you withdrawal from your business for yourself as a sole proprietor, you will first need to set-up an Owner's Equity account in your Chart of Accounts called Owner's Draw. Then the withdrawal would be recorded with a debit to the Owner's Draw account and a credit to the Bank Account.

How Do You Do This on Quicken Home and Business?
by: Anonymous

You had a great answer for the question, but in my case things are a little different:

I too am a sole proprietor with a very small, simple business. How do I categorize withdrawing money? I have "salary" under personal income in my personal checking account for my deposits, but when I withdraw money from the business account I don't see anything appropriate in the standard quicken categories. I have thought it would come under a business expense, but I need to make sure. Also when I try to set up such a category quicken seems to want to automatically re-assign the withdrawal to "personal expense."

thanks

Account for Business Expenses in Sole Proprietor
by: BB

Thank you for your question.

In a sole proprietorship, business expenses paid from your personal account would be entered as an adjusting journal entry as follows:

DEBIT Expense Accounts
CREDIT Owners Contribution

On the flip side, personal expenses paid from a business would be posted as:

DEBIT Owners Draw
CREDIT Bank Account

Sure thing! You can list your business expenses in the Profit and Loss Account when dealing with Indian Income Tax. It's like telling the tax fairy about all the costs your business had during the year. Just keep it honest and clear, and you're good to go.
