Earned Income Tax Question

Earned Income Tax Question

We received an out of court settlement in a liability suit we filed.

It was only $3250.00. Do we have to claim this as Earned Income and where do we show it on.

I usually just file 10-40EZ, we just have w-2’s. If I claim this, where should I show the Earned Income and can I subtract the expenses like filing fees and medical cost?

Earned Income Credit

I'm doing my taxes - Trying to do worksheet for Earned Income Credit. I'm self employed filing Schedule C.
Income is noted on Line 12 of 1040 (profit on Schedule C) Doing worksheet for EIC - after entering amount from Schedule SE Sec A line 3, it says to enter amount from line 29 of 1040 which is self-employed health insurance - I thought you deducted self-employment tax. Which is it? (also is it 1/2 the SEP tax credit)????
Thanks, Judy

Earned Income Credit and Minimum Deductions

by Janet
(Daytona, FL)

While working my taxes online I saw that I had a minimum deduction of 8500. I also have and and earned income tax credit of up to 5666. I am claiming myself and two dependent children under 16 years of age. my income was only 2100. How can my refund only be 1021., when both my minimum deduction and the EIC are so much more? I have no other deductions and am filing on the easy form.

Earned Income Tax Credit

Earned Income Tax Credit

Good day~
I worked as an Independent Contractor and am filing 1040 as head of household for 2010. I earned a very small amount on my 1099-misc ($600) and some unemployment 1099-G ($1765. I have 3 young children, one which was born in 2010. I was trying to filing independently using an e-file program. The program final report was no refund. I think this is wrong. If I'm not mistaken, I should be eligible to receive something for the fact that I have 3 children. Am I right?

Dependent Credits
by: Stephanie

Hello,
If you worked as an Independent Contractor and are filing 1040 as head of household for 2010 while earning $600 on your 1099-misc and $1765 in unemployment and claiming 3 young children, you should definitely receive a refund.

There is a $400 making work pay credit that you should be eligible for, as well as Earned Income and Additional Child Tax Credits. As your earned income was only 600 these amounts will be limited, but you are still entitled to the credits.

Earned Income Tax Credit Dispute

by Lucy
(AR)

I filed my two daughters on my tax return for the year 2008 and received the earned income credit. Well, it was time for me to file for the year 2009 and I did the instant loan with H&R block and qualified for $1000.00.

But, after the two weeks the remainder of my refund was suppose to arrive but it never happened. To my surprise I called to see if my return was in and it said that I had been audited!

Well, when I called the IRS they said someone else had carried one of my dependents for the year 2008 and that I owed the government. They stated that was the reason they took away the earned income credit for the year 2009. But, I never received a letter in the mail for the year 2008 because I had changed addresses.

They advised me that I had to send in birth certificates and social security cards and my lease to verify these were my kids. I did that but later on they told me to send something from the school or doctors office because I had passed the relationship test but they needed something stating that the children were in my home.

I did that also and they claim they never received it but I received a letter from the IRS stating that I didn't have to do anything else further and to wait on them to respond.

Well, here we are at the tax year 2010. I filed the same two dependents but with the form 8862 with this return. Well, guess what they gave me credit and applied it to my debt!

So, I called them (IRS) and all this time they said they never received the school records! So, now I have resent school records and correspondences for the year 2008 and 2009. They have assigned my case to someone but I need to know will they possibly go this far back and reverse my refund?

I also have received a 2645c letter since resending that information stating that they haven't completed all the processing necessary for a complete response.

What I don't understand why give me credit for the tax year 2010 and not for 2009 and 2008 when someone carried just one of the dependents in 2008 and not both of them in the first place. Do you think that they are actually looking at my information or is this just bologna?

Earning EIC For My 2 Year Old Daughter

by Martin
(Chicago)

My fiance and I live in the same household, but we are not married. She works as a server and I work as a Data analyst. Last year, I claimed our 2 year old daughter, and earned EIC because I was making less than $36,000.

This year, I made around $45,000, therefore I do
not qualify for EIC. My question is that, do you think my fiance' would be able to claim our daughter this year since she made significantly less than I did?

She made about $6700 all together this past year in 2011. I know she would qualify for EIC, but I just don't want any red flags thrown up since her income is significantly small. I also want to add that I am the one that provides monthly insurance
for my daughter.

I get charged about $104 a month for medical
insurance for myself and my daughter. I am trying to maximize our tax return this year, and I think the best way to do so is for my fiance
to claim our 2 year old daughter.

What do you think the best way to approach this situation would be? I am also not sure what my fiance filled out as far as her deductions when she first got hired. Does this matter?

Earned Income Credit For 2 Month Old
by: Stephanie

Hello,

Thanks for the question.

As long as the child lives with you and/or you provided over half of the support and are claiming the child as a dependent on your tax return, you should qualify for the earned income tax credit even though she is only 2 months old.

EIC Eligible?

My daughter (age 22) attends college in St. Louis but we live in Cincinnati OH. I pay her rent (my name is on the rental contract) and houehold bills. I am divorced. I have not claimed her as a dependant in the past because her mother does. She files taxes on a small summer income. Am I eligible for the EIC?

EIC Question

Thanks in advance.

I have been divorced for a half dozen years...and my ex wife and I share child custody with Tom, age 13, 50% each.

Her income is higher, so she is claiming Tom as dependent. But with 50% custody, can I claim EIC?

Thanks again. sz
