Dependents

My 23 year-old daughter graduated from college in December 2008. She moved back in with my wife and me upon graduation until she found a job and moved out in August 2009. If I supported her for over 7 months in 2009 prior to her moving out and getting a job, can I claim her as a dependent on my 2009 tax return?

Hi,

Yes, as long as she made under $3,500 she can be claimed as your qualifying relative.

Qualifying Dependent

My son and his girlfriend had a baby in November 2009. They live together and are not married. The baby has Medicaid through the mother. The mother does not work. My son provides support for both the mother and child. Can my son claim the child as a dependent on his income tax?

Hello,

Thanks for your inquiry. Yes, as long as your son provided more than half the support and the child lived with him, he can claim the child as a dependent on his income tax return.
