Adoption Credit Income Tax Question

Adoption Credit Income Tax Question

I am retired and I moved in with mom to take care of her. She is 91 yrs. old and can not be left alone.

I am also raising a 9 yr. old step-grandaughter and I am adopting her from CPS and I was just told on 11/10/11 that I qualify for the adoption credit when I file my income tax.

I told CPS "But I don't work" and the person from cps said go get a job. Now I am stressed. Do I have to have earned income to get the credit?

I'm upset that I was just told about this credit one and a
half month before the year ends.

Understanding The Adoption Credit
by: BB

No, you don't necessarily need earned income to qualify for the adoption credit. The adoption credit is a non-refundable tax credit, which means it can reduce your tax liability to zero but won't result in a refund if you have no tax liability.

Ohio Special Needs Adoptions
by: BB

When filing your taxes for the adoption of a special needs child in Ohio, you generally need to submit Form 8839, Qualified Adoption Expenses, along with supporting documentation.

The supporting documents may include adoption agency agreements, legal fees, court costs, and any other qualified adoption expenses. It's advisable to consult with a tax professional or refer to the IRS guidelines for detailed information based on your specific situation.
